Swimming, Biking, and Running (continued)This same running buddy, C.T. was the organizer for the Frostbite Half-Marathon that was run every January. Everyone is bussed out to the race starting point which is out in the country north of Pheobe. The race ends at the North Jackson Fire Station in Starkville. I ran it several times. It always took a long time to get the results. C.T. asked if I could write a computer program to do race results. I did and that took care of the delay, because as soon as the last person crossed the finish line, the results were printed. That program was used for the Frostbite Half-Marathon for the next twenty years through 3 later organizers. Five years after I retired from all competitive events, my son talked me into doing the Frostbite again on my 70th birthday. My brother and I ran the entire race side-by-side. My son and his wife ran out a head of us. I won my age group, again. |

I also ran two marathon races, first the Marine Corp Marathon in Washington, D.C. and several years later the Chicago Marathon. The Marine Corp was the most eventful. It was a miserable day, 42 degrees, cloudy, and misty the entire race. The race started and ended at the Iwo Jima Monument and we got to run by all the major capitol buildings along the way, White House, Capitol Building, Lincoln and Jefferson Memorial. Nancy and I flew to Washington, D.C., four days later, just as we were getting ready to fly home, our luggage showed up. Fortunately, I had taken all of my running gear in my carry-on bag. |
